Client FAQs

About the coaching process:

Who are your clients?
Since 2001, I have worked with over 700 men and women of from ages 19 through 75.  Three quarters of my clients have been job seekers or career changers.  Others have been recovering from or learning to live with serious illnesses or navigating other challenging life transitions like completing a writing project, planning retirement or applying to graduate school.  The common denominator is that they are all motivated to grow and to live authentically and fully!  Coaching works powerfully if combined with willingness and effort.

How long does coaching take?
The length of coaching is really up to you and varies depending on these and other factors:

  • Your goals for coaching
  • The degree of clarity you have about your priorities and direction when you begin coaching
  • The number of fields you would like to explore in your career search
  • Time and effort you can put into this process in between coaching sessions

Throughout our coaching relationship, we will engage in direct and personal conversations.  You can count on me to be honest and straightforward, to ask clarifying questions, and to use a variety of coaching tools.  If our coaching is not beneficial to you or is frustrating or disappointing in any way, PLEASE raise this with me.  Let me know if at any time there is something about the coaching you would like to change.  Of course, I also love feedback about what is working well.

You will know when you are done with coaching, and we will end with a last session that reviews your learning and accomplishments.

How often will we meet for coaching?
I am committed to designing our coaching to suit your individual needs.  At the beginning of our coaching we will decide how best to schedule our appointments and then continue to check in on this question periodically in order to be sure that the pace suits you.  There is no one formula for coaching; therefore, we will design a pace and process that works best for you.  Most often I meet with new clients weekly and then, after they have established a sense of direction and an action plan for themselves, we meet less often.

Will we meet by phone or in person?
Sessions are conducted either by phone or in person at my home office in Boston, depending on your preference and location.

We will begin and end our coaching appointments on time.  Please call me or ring the doorbell at the scheduled time.

With our busy lives, we will occasionally need to move a session.  If you need to reschedule, please do your best to give me at least 24 hours notice and, of course, I will do the same.  You can go to the CALENDAR at the private section of my website or send an email or phone my office.

What happens in between coaching sessions?
That is up to you.  I will make requests of you or suggest an inquiry or action for the week.  In all cases, please respond honestly whether you accept this request, decline it or want to alter it to better suit you.  "Homework" is meant to be useful to you. Lots of reflection, action and learning can happen in between sessions.

You may find that you get the best use from the coaching session if you come with a specific focus in mind.  Spend a few minutes prior reflecting on your progress since our last session and preparing for the next one by using the Session Preparation form here on the website under the FORMS tab.

If you would like to share a success, reflection, question or problem, please feel free to email me or use the CLIENT LOG on this website.  I am always pleased to hear what is on your mind and will be sure to address any questions or issues before or during our next appointment.

Is coaching confidential?
Yes.  Our coaching relationship is completely confidential.  Feel free to share your coaching experience with others, but I do NOT tell anyone you are my client or reveal any content of our coaching to anyone in a way that would reveal your identity.

When am I finished with coaching?
You are finished when you decide it is time to end coaching.  Please give me at least ONE session's notice so we can review your learning and accomplishments and say a proper goodbye.

What is your background and experience?
I have three coaching certifications from the International Coach Federation, the Coaches Training Institute and the Empowerment Institute as well as a Masters degree in Labor Studies and a graduate Certificate in Management.  I also have three certifications in personal branding.  I established my private coaching practice in 2001 and have worked with hundreds of people one-on-one and in groups--most of whom have made inspiring, positive changes in their professional and/or personal lives.  For additional information about my background and experience, go to the BIO page of my public website, www.tracyfitzpatrick.com.

Are there professional standards for the coaching industry?
Yes.  The International Coach Federation, the main industry association, has established a Code of Ethics, core competencies and accreditation processes in order to establish professional standards of quality.  A copy of the ICF's Code of Ethics is provided in the Coaching Profession section under the DOCUMENTS tab.  To learn more about the ICF, click here.

What is the best way to provide you with honest feedback about coaching?
Throughout our coaching relationship we will engage in direct and personal conversations.  You can count on me to be honest and straightforward, and I invite you to approach me in the same way.  If our coaching is not benefiting you or is frustrating or disappointing in any way, PLEASE raise this with me sooner rather than later.  Raise an issue during a session, by email or phone, or through the CLIENT LOG or the Evaluation form here on the website.  Please let me know if at any time there is something about the coaching you would like to change or what is working well for you in coaching.

Upon completion of coaching, I will ask you to fill out an Evaluation form, which is provided here online.  But please do not wait until we are finished coaching to give me feedback.  I welcome it at any time.

About scheduling:

What if I need to schedule or reschedule an appointment?
Please give me at least 24 hours notice if you need to change an appointment, unless a last minute emergency makes that impossible.

It’s easy to make a change. With at least 24 hours notice, you can schedule or reschedule an appointment by using the online CALENDAR or by sending me an email.  Just follow these steps:

To schedule an appointment:

  1. Click on the CALENDAR tab at the top menu of this page.
  2. Locate blocks of Available time, which are represented in light blue.  Once you find a time that works in your schedule, click on the "Schedule" button to confirm the appointment time.  I will receive an email notifying me of your scheduled appointment.

To change an existing appointment:

  1. Click on the CALENDAR tab.
  2. Locate that appointment on the schedule and click on the title of the appointment. This will open an editing screen.
  3. Click on the “Edit” button and change your appointment to an alternative time within the Available blocks of time.
  4. The calendar will be updated.  You will see the scheduling change reflected.  I will receive an email notification letting me know of the change.

To cancel or change an appointment within 24 hours of the appointment time:

If you must cancel an appointment within 24 hours of the appointment time because of illness or an emergency, you must email or phone me directly: tracy@tracyfitzpatrick.com or 617-553-8686.

If you pay per session, payment is requested at or before each session. You may pay monthly for all sessions that month or individually for each session—whichever works best for you. You may pay by check, cash or PayPal. Please make checks out to Tracy Fitzpatrick.  Please mail checks to:
